USS Raider - NCC 42558
Damage Control (09/01/02 to 23/02/2002)

Two days ago, Obsidian Fleet command received a transmission from Commander Torak, a notorious Romulan captain in the region, who has been for some time now gathering support for an unknown cause, in the past destroying Federation and Romulan shipping, as well as being behind a probable hostage taking on the Red Herring, whose crew have never been heard from since. The message was to inform the fleet that Torak was ready to stand down after negotiations, with the probable hand over of all the ships that supported him.

Barely having finished it's last mission, and on the day of Captain Clay's promotion to Commander, the Raider is ordered to move to the Thai Beta system (a journey taking just over a day) and be part of a 3 ship task force, including the USS Pacific and Newton. Their mission is to investigate the situation further and take part in the negotiations, though it is believed that the offer from Torak is far from genuine. A Romulan ambassador will be present on the USS Newton, with Captain Ichovic in overall command of the Federation force.

Many of the Raider's senior staff beamed down to the moon as a show of trust between the groups. The first unofficial meeting with Torak appeared to go well, with all crews being invited to a dinner later that day. Lt. Yearling and Phobos located a large quantity of listening devices planted by the Romulans all over the Raider's assigned section on the base, and proceeded to disable all of them. Arriving for their evening meal with Torak in the Executive Hall, the Raider and Pacific crew found the room to be empty. Immediately suspicious, the backed away from the room before a bomb exploded in it, shaking the facility. Just as Lt. Nitai beamed back to the Raider, the Romulan vessel P'Tar fired a huge weapons burst at the USS Pacific, destroying it almost instantly. At the same time, they engaged the USS Newton and beamed troops onto the USS Raider while it's shields were down, taking out it's weapons and defensive systems. The Raider went to warp in attempt to escape the power of the P'Tar and is struggling to prevent itself being destroyed from the inside by the Romulan soldiers.

On the moon, the team was pursued through the complex by Romulan forces, and escaped temporarily, taking a lift down further into the mining tunnels, where on a suggestion from Lt. Yearling, they rigged up a power source in order to activate the transporter systems. Beaming to the surface, the Raider crew had regained enough control of the ship to move back into orbit of the planet and, using Lt. Phobos' unique physiology, beam the team up. Under heavy fire from the Romulan ships, the Raider managed to rescue only a few of the stricken USS Newton's crew before needing to retreat for repairs. The Romulan forces cloaked and have not yet reappeared, while several explosive devices were found on the Raider on vital systems, some of which are yet to be disabled. The USS Raider, it's shields somewhat repaired, returned to the Newton's side following a distress signal, and managed to rescue the few survivors with a runabout.

Following a suggestion from Ensign Phillips, warp plasma was ejected into space from the Raider's two Razor fighters and the runabout, in the hope of both making cloaked vessels more visible and providing a defense perimeter around the Raider - which could be activated by detonating the plasma. During the rescue, the Romulan vessels decloaked and opened fire on the Raider and the runabout 'Valencia Island', while the small Razor flight attempted to help escort the runabout back to the Raider. As events unfolded, it appeared that some of the Romulan vessels were fighting amongst themselves - the Romulan government had all the time been monitoring the situation with a small amount of cloaked ships, which grouped with the Raider in attempt to survive the growing firefight. In the heated battle, the Federation group lost track of the whereabouts of the cruiser, to which Commander Torak was believed to have beamed to, though not before the Raider managed to cripple it's weapons. As the rest of the opposing Romulan ships cloaked, the cruiser was picked up just as it was about to go to warp. After a brief pursuit, the Raider stood down, heavily damaged, but lucky to have survived at all. The USS Raider is now on course for Deep Space 7 for repairs.
